Same Fallibility
This country is composed of the same fallible people who inhabit any other place. Its governors can be no wiser or more intelligent than any other, and its people no more virtuous. Surely China is as hag-ridden with prejudice and resistance to change as any nation is. I have no firm expectations for the future. But I do find China the most challenging and interesting place I have seen. It seems to be systematically - yet haltingly and questioningly - attempting what few are trying so persistently to do. It seems to want to make life better for everyone, starting from a line we can hardly imagine.
With each advance, the society becomes more complicated and the choices more difficult to make. The tensions within the country are bound to increase. At a point that seems long ago, but can only be a few weeks, I met an American student of Chinese, fluent in the spoken and written word, hitchhiking around, living with the people.
