main floor and two circular balconies above, accommodating an equal number of people. The space is unsupported by pillars, allowing all a good view. Sets of buttons situated at intervals permit simultaneous translations to be heard by the many minorities who do not speak Chinese. The front of the hall is a revolving stage which allows it to be turned into a theater with an orchestra. Our guide said that recently he had seen a French film there.
Adjoining the Congress hall is a reception room where thousands can dine at once and where even more can attend a party. These two great rooms, in spite of their size, are designed to give a sense of human scale so that one does not feel lost within them. Every feature, such as a parquet wooden floor in the dining hall, is of the most elegant and beautiful materials and construction. The hand made carpets alone must be worth millions of dollars. While the remarkable architects and engineers who designed it are not mentioned, much is made of the fact that the building was constructed in less than one year to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the P.R.C. in 1959.
Modern Chinese Art The most attractive features of the building are a series of rooms, which we would call caucus rooms, for the delegates, of the provinces, autonimous regions, and the cities of Peking and Shanghai. Each room features the art of a province or other locality and thus is distinctive. This was my first opportunity to see great modern Chinese art executed in traditional style.
