Dep. Holt continued to relay the course of events of April 15, 1982. He had obtained handwriting samples from Coates, who had come in voluntarily to the Culpeper Sheriff's Department. Holt submitted the handwriting samples to the Secret Service for analysis. After submitting these samples Holt turned the evidence over to Rappahannock County because he determined that no crime had been committed in Culpeper County.
Richard A. Dusek of the Secret Service presented the most damaging evidence against Coates. Dusek is an examiner of questioned documents such as savings bonds, threats against the president, and check forgeries.
