It would be romantic and false to deny the terrible toil in field and factory that characterizes life for most of the people of the PRC, and which creates a sense of a world of work close to nature. One is ever conscious of the want of freedom that we so take for granted and so regularly abuse. A tourist could never feel at home in China because one is always treated as a guest and catered to to an embarrassing degree. Charm, service and privilege can lull one into a never-never land. But I think that the people who live in Rappahannock can perhaps understand better than many could the difference between the environment of much of China and that of most American citizens as we contrast our county and say much of Northern Virginia.
