Junior Fire Fighters The board also took no action last week on a request from Paul Poling for adoption of a local ordinance which would allow full use of junior fire fighters.
Poling reported that fire services successfully supported enabling legislation in last year’s General Assembly session which allows junior fire fighters (16, 17 and 18year-olds) to enter burning buildings as part of their fire fighting activities, provided the young people have had at least 60 hours of fire training and 40 hours of CPR.
Adoption of a local ordinance under the new enabling legislation "gives us the option of using juniors to their full advantage,” Poling said. "But individual departments still have the option of prohibiting juniors from entering burning buildings.”
