Theatre Opens
In Luray
After more than a decade of darkness, Luray's indoor movie theatre is scheduled to open July 23. The opening of the 225seat Foxfire Theatre in the former Page Theatre building on East Main Street was announced this week by Charles and Beverly Bowen, owners of the structure. Plans call for the addition of a second 225-seat theatre in the same building next spring.
The July 23 opening will coincide with the nationwide release of the film, “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” which will be the initial offering. The film, starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton, is based on the hit Broadway show and is expected to be one of the top box office successes of the year.
The Bowens are completing major remodeling of the building which first opened on May 29, 1939, and operated continuously until December 5, 1971. Equipment includes a modern stereo sound system, new screen, new projection system and air conditioning.
At the same time, the remodeled theatre will retain many of the original structural features of the old Page Theatre which was hailed at its 1939 opening as "among the best in the state,” according to the Bowens.
