We left China as we entered it, on the train from Canton to Kowloon, Hong Kong. Surely the green, blissful countryside through which we passed is among the most attractive scenes of nature and people in the world. One could spend a trip to China just touring this area traversed in a few hours by a sedate and comfortable train, the seats of which can be turned to allow a direct view as one passes slowly along. People and buffalo work and move through great fields of rice. Meticulously tended vegetable plots and orchards are intersperced by hills to make a harmonious landscape. This area is a lush, tropical one which those of us who had spent two weeks in the desert especially appreciated. Suddenly we reached the border and the change was immediate. Commercialism, modernity
