At the June 14 meeting of the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors, incumbent school board member Nelson Lane presented the supervisors with petitions reportedly bearing 407 signatures from residents of StonewallHawthorne District who favored his reappointment to the school board.
Supporters of Jimmy Cannon likewise presented petitions last month signed by 235 people, all but a dozen or so registered voters of that district. Cannon's supporters also questioned whether names on Lane’s list belonged to residents of Stonewall-Hawthorne.
The district representative on the board, H. B. Wood, verified only that the signers were “good and live people.” At that June 14 session, Lane was reappointed to the school board for a four-year terms.
Last Wednesday Sharon Kilpatrick, one of the leaders of the petition drive for Cannon, presented a formal request, relayed by supervisor clerk Diane Bruce, for copies of Lane’s lists.
