a republican past. The need for such propaganda is manifest everywhere: China is a “third world” country. It began with millions of poverty stricken, war ravaged, illiterate people, long degraded by foreigners. It is the home now of a quarter of the human race. China's must be the largest government or series of governments in the world. It is an experiment as novel and adventuresome as our own was at our nation's founding. The Communists here undertook their work in a much more complicated age, and with many fewer advantages. They grapple with insolvable problems, as we have - who can forget our Civil War?
I question if any Western person, or perhaps anyone, can understand or know enough about present-day China. It presents a deceptively simple face: everywhere one looks one sees individuals and groups working at mundane tasks in a largely non-mechanistic way. When I was here before, there was the confusion of any construction site. That confusion persists, but what remarkable construction over three years! I think of those speeded up pictures of a plant growing and blooming before one’s eyes. Peking looks like a new city, yet much that was there before the revolution remains.
