By DAPHNE HUTCHINSON Rappahannock N«*w» Staff Writer The Rappahannock school board on Tuesday voted unanimously to donate necessary right-of-way and in return, the Virginia Department of Highways will allocate $100,000 for construction of two turn lanes on Route 211 in front of the county high school.
“And I’ll try to sneak a right turn lane into the elementary school (where the gravel portion of the bus garage parking lot is now),” resident highway engineer Don Askew told the board members at the July 13 session.
Askew gave credit for approval of the construction project to Piedmont District supervisor Charles Estes. “Thanks to him, we have $100,000 and as tight as things are, they don’t give that amount of money away easily.”
The resident engineer explained that at his request Estes and supervisor chairman Dick Latham had appeared at the highway department’s pre-allocation hearing in Culpeper some months ago to plead for funds to four-lane Route 211 between Washington and Spenyville, a request that was denied. “I'd be surprised if we get it in the next eight or ten years,” Askew added.
