Judge Shore Robertson presided in Circuit Court as the jury convicted Donnie Ray Coates of Culpeper of forgery and grand larceny with a sentence of two years in jail and a S2000 fine. Prosecuting the case was Doug Baumgardner, Commonwealth Attorney. Elliott DeJarnette, defended Coates. Donnie Ray Coates was accused of forging a check that was written on a US Treasury account, made out to Curtis L. Johnson of Culpeper.
Johnson works for the US Government in Culpeper in the Soil Conservation Department. He testified that he received the paycheck of $432.43 on June 25, 1981 and put it in his pocket. After work he went home, after stopping at the 7-11 in Culpeper. When he arrived home Johnson went to take the check from his pocket and it was gone. He re-traced the ground that he had
