The other alternative for farmers with infested fields is harvesting, which removes the damaged stems and allows new growth to begin. Most potato leafhopper nymphs and many adults are killed by harvesting. Those adults that do survive tend to leave the field.
Owings recommends checking the stubble a week after harvesting to see if the leafhoppers are present. If they are present in sufficient amounts, then a stubble spray may be indicated.
