As DeJarnette continued he asked the jury that, if they did find Coates guilty, not to be too harsh on him.

After the jury had received their instructions they were dismissed. After a short time one juror came out to ask “How do we sentence him?” After a total of 45 minutes, the jury of 3 men and 9 women read their statement of guilty on both accounts and sentenced Coates to 2 years in jail, and a $2000 fine.
