walls were: “paintings” of inlaid marble portraying scenes with birds, flowers and landscapes, others of embroiderary of fish, monkeys and pandas, for instance, and similar works made of feathers. Only careful examination reveals how they are constructed. Light, large porcelain platters of pink, white and green scenes are mounted on the walls of one room, so that as one enters one is uplifted and made glad. Screens of woven bamboo with bas-reliefs in carved bamboo decorate other rooms. There were cases holding carved ivory, jade, lacquer works and objects of other materials made with skill and charm. Many of these precious works of art could be touched, since this is not a museum, but of course no one tried to touch them. The taste expressed in everything is refined.
