The Rappahannock supervisors swung their axes at the proposed 1983-84 school budget on Monday.
At the end of an hour long work session, they had sliced pay increases to four percent, chopped $25,000 from capital outlay and cut two new teaching positions and summer maintenance help. That major fiscal surgery and other reductions to educational expenditures brought the total approved for the county’s public schools down to $2,448,032. The figure is $116,830 less than requested for 1983-84 and $28,333 less than appropriated for the current year.
Breaking with tradition, the supervisors emphasized that they intend to approve the budget by categories, effectively preventing the school board from transferring funds without their approval within the budget to offset cuts in specific areas. In past years, the governing body has approved the bottom line of the school budget, leaving it to the school board to determine how and where to absorb reductions to proposed educational spending.
