The statistics are easy to understand. Over one-third of American households are beset with alcoholic problems; alcohol-related traffic deaths claim 25,000 lives a year; 65 percent of all incidents involving domestic violence are alcohol-related. The list of alcohol-linked tragedies goes on and on.
Harder to measure are the social problems and lives of quiet misery that surround the disease, “it is by far the major cause of problems - both directly and indirectly - that we see,” said Lee Nettles, director of the Rappahannock Mental Health Clinic in Washington. “In terms of what we cannot measure, no one knows the cost.”
