Searching through resource materials for a ray of hope, Patty had already looked up the type of break — olecranon fracture — in Equus, a medically oriented horse magazine. “They classified this type of fracture as catastrophic.”
But McKav-Smith assured her that “as far as catastrophes go, this is one of the better ones.”
Patty remembers sobbing back, “D’Arcy’s pregnant!"
That’s all the more reason to try to save the mare, her friend countered. “If it wasn’t for Matthew McKavSmith, I wouldn’t have known who to call and I wouldn’t have had the faith to go through surgery,” Patty stressed.
For surgery was D’Arcy’s only chance. The break couldn't be put in a cast. Treatment, using a technique developed in Switzerland for skiing injuries, involved repairing the bone with a pressure plate and screws.
