“The control you have on salaries doesn’t amount to much," the accountant told the supervisors, listing employees for which they set salaries as clerk to the board, zoning administrator, building inspector, dog warden and maintenance help. Salary increases for those positions are figured in the budget at five percent, he added.
After a brief review of proposed expenditures other than educational, the supervisors cut $6,000 from prisoner care, which had been raised from $6,000 in the current year to a projected $16,000 for 1986-84. “It’s going to go up but not that much,” said Supervisor Hubert Gilkey. He noted that Rappahannock can expect to pay other jurisdictions for incerating county prisoners until early January when renovation work on the jail is expected to be completed.
The only other change made before the supervisors tackled school requests came in the adjustment to the health department’s budget.
