INGROWN TOENAILSANNOYANCE OR HEALTH PROBLEM There are different types of ingrown toenails They can range from a slight annoying pain when in the shoe to redness. swelling, infection and even lymphadenitis or infection reaching up into the leg. Any persistent pain from an ingrown toenail should be treated There are excellent simple methods available to modern medicine for permanent correction Most are relatively painless. The "V" that people cut out of the front of their nails will very rarely work The problem is caused by an incurvation of the nail along the border and pressure from the shoe sets up an inflammatory reaction, which if not treated can lead to infection Many times ingrown toenails are treated by antibiotics alone, however, usually the irritating portion of the nail must be removed for relief of the infection Remember, the longer the problem is ignored the worse it can become A public service with the aim of promoting a better foot health environment.
