Agent Rap Owings has retired after 14 years at Rappahannock’s VPI Extension office.
John Huddleston. Extension Service Director announced Owings' retirement to the county supervisors at Monday's board meeting.
“There’s a rumor that you’re going to close the office," said Chairman J. R. Latham. “Can you dispell that?"
The office will remain open but Owings will not be replaced until July 1, Huddleston said. There is a freeze on vacancies due to state-ordered budget reductions, he explained. Huddleston acknowledged that an extension agent opening is being filled in neighboring Madison County but attributed the action to receipt of "stacks of petitions" asking that an agent be hired immediately.
He pointed out that Birgitt Thornhill. Rappahannock’s home demonstration agent, has her degree in agriculture. In addition, Huddleston said, Jesse Judy, regional farm management agent with the Luray office, will be detailed here one or two days per week to assist Thornhill with agricultural problems and soil samplings.
