D’Arcy’s due date was April 3. It came and went with no signs of labor beginning. So did the next day — and the next — and the next. On April 7, Patty began sleeping in the barn and checking the mare’s condition every hour around the clock.
That vigil continued for five days. On the sixth, April 12, at about 9:30 p.m., John Alexander heard a noise from the stable. Patty had just come inside for a rest after examining D’Arcy at 9. “Mares never foal that early in the evening,” she noted.
