Unlike smog, tension ami pressure are still with us when we crpss the Rappahannock line. The mountain air may cure an ellergie cough but can <lo nothing for loneliness, growing up, growing old, boredom, family problems, poverty, pain or the hundreds of other worries from which alcohol provides a temporary escape. Nor can the beautiful scenery substitute for good relationships, satisfying w'ork, recognition, love and courage. For many people, urban and rural, these rewards are found in a bottle and disappear the next day, replaced by a feeling of loss and guilt that increases the desire for a temporary escape. And so the cycle goes on and on.
Some people may drink heavily for a while and then stop. Some may engage in social drinking for years without a problem. Some may have trouble when they
