sleepy little town on a Sunday morning in summer. Two friends, Berenger, an indolent, untidy sort of fellow, and Jean, a welldressed believer in propriety and self-improvement, meet for a cup of coffee. John lectures his friend on dress, moderation and selfimprovement.

Suddenly they are startled to see a rhinoceros go charging down the street, throwing up dust and trumpeting. Everybody thinks this very odd. There has been no circus there for years, and there is no swamp within miles where a rhinoceros would normally make his habitat. Soon still another horned beast pounds down the pavement.

Within the next few days more and more rhinoceroses are galloping around the town and becoming perilous.
