Financial crisis plagues day care centers here and everywhere. Often, image problems add to these worries. Many people see day care as a way for lazy mothers to avoid care of their children. Or, they believe that mothers of young children are working for a new car or a larger wardrobe.
The economic facts of life today are that many women are the head of their household; others must work to supplement their husband’s income or replace it in this time of growing unemployment; others are so isolated that the chance for their young children to be with others their age is an important basic need.
The location of a new day care and learning center here benefits all of us in many ways. And this goal is well within sight if there is good response to the second-public-stage of the drive.
The selection of an architect wellknown for his earth-berm (earth insulated) buildings; the completion of plans befitting the Child Care and Learning Center’s needs, the success of the leadership grant drive are all giant steps toward a longstanding goal, and Manookian finds progress so far very encouraging. Locating the two acres to spend some of that money on will be another big step. After that, says Manookian, it’s up to the community.
