conformation of an already existing arrangement, Huddleston said. The county pays for one-third of the salaries for extension agents, fringe benefits and telephone service and furnishes offices space. “We pay the rest of the salaries and furnish a full-time secretary,” Huddleston said. “That’s basically been the unwritten agreement for years.” Only the fringe benefits are new, he noted. Huddleston reminded the supervisors that VPI had installed a special telephone line to the extension office last year that enables agents to call over the state without long distance expense. In addition, he said, Owings’ unexpended salary for the rest of this fiscal year can be carried over to cover the county’s cost in picking up fringe benefits for extension staff in 1983.
For the county’s onethird share of an agent’s salary (grade 11 on the state pay scale), $(>,900 has been requested for 1983-84, Huddleston said. "We want to get a qualified person but we want to get one as cheaply as we can,” he noted. Huddleston indicated that the $6,900 share should cover salary for a new agent who has recently graduated from VPI, adding that if the supervisors want a more experienced person, they must be prepared to pay for that experience.
