Horseowners should vaccinate their animals against equine encephalitis as soon as possible, according to Dr. George B. Estes, State Veterinarian of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
Equine encephalitis, also known as “sleeping sickness”, is transmitted from mosquitoes. This disease can become a serious problem as mosquito populations increase during warm weather. Encephalitis is often fatal to horses and the ones that survive are marked with poor coordination and impaired vision. A specific treatment for the disease is unavailable.
