To the editor:

Effective education is not a process which lends itself to demands. To enter any human relationship with a list of demands is to embrace failure from its conception. Why then do some insist on approaching public education from this perspective? Two possible reasons are misconceptions concerning effective learning and ignorance regarding legitimate educational goals.

Public education in the 1980s can not fulfill its responsibilities to our future by generating mass produced citizens or educators. Presently, available information is progressing geometrically. To prepare young people to function, contribute, and successfully seek personal fulfillment will become increasingly more difficult.
