The difficulty is real, not an educator’s rationalization to mask professional incompetence. It is a difficulty involving the problems of prediction. What actual subject matter that we now teach will be relevant in twenty years? My answer would be that many truths of today may degenerate into the quaint folk tales of tomorrow.
If you doubt this, I refer you to the explosion of new knowledge in physics, medicine, astronomy, and chemistry in recent years.
