No One Knows Its Cost

* In the U.S. about seven out of ten adults drink alcoholic beverages. Of these, about one out of ten is an alcoholic, a total near 10 million. * Three out of four alcoholics are reasonably well-accepted members of their communities (not “Skid Row” types.) * The average alcoholic affects at least four others by his behavior. * For the economy, alcoholism means at least $42 billion lost, including $19 billion in lost productivity, $5 billion in motor vehicle accidents; $14 billion in health, medical and social service costs, and $3 billion in violent crimes.
