What then is my role in facing these challenges, if I assert that it is not to “manufacture” citizens? I maintain that rather than teaching subject matter, serving as a drill master for standardized tests, or operating as an extension of the local police department, my job is to guide.
I must guide young people through floods of stimuli that can become more confusing and contradictory each day. To effectively instruct people who can expect little stability in their futures, I can not place false importance on subject matter.
