Tom Campbell, assistant principal at Rappahannock Elementary School, was picked by the school board Tuesday evening from 25 applicants for second in command of the county’s public school system.
He will assume the post of assistant superintendant on August 1.
According to superintendant Robert Estabrook, the board members—after voting unanimously to appoint Campbell—were lavish in their praise of his performance as assistant principal, a position he has held since November, 1981. ’“He has received superb evaluations. He’s been very highly thought of by myself, Jerry Lysik (the former assistant superintendant), Maggie Piper (elementary school principal) and the school board,” Estabrook said.
Campbell, a native of Luray, graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in social studies from Wake Forest and went on to earn his masters in administration from the University of Virginia. He taught in North Carolina before returning to the Piedmont Virginia area and a job as social studies teacher at Greene County High School. Campbell went back to Luray as social studies teacher and basketball coach, was promoted to administrative assistant to the principal and then to assistant principal and athletic director, a position he held until accepting the assistant principalship here.
