On the front page of the July 18,
1963 edition of the Rappahannock News, the headline described ali tale of intrigue and suspense involving Rappahannock law enforcement authorities.
“Horse Hair Proves Instrumental Evidence In Solution of Series of Break-Ins Locally,” the headline said and went on to describe the case:
“A single horse hair was instrumental in the solution of a wave of burglaries in this area which occurred in May.
“According to Sheriff C.K. Estes, John Davis Knott, 23, of Shenandoah and Gerald Page Bradley, 17, of Luray have been arrested on changes of breaking and entering in this county and in Rockingham, Fauquier and Page counties.
“A third man, implicated in the crimes, has not yet been apprehended. The two are presently lodged in the Rappahannock jail.
“On the night of May 21 Way land Ford Tractor Sales in Warrenton, Old Mill Snack Bar at Washington and Walnut Lodge Service Station near here were broken into and much of the merchandise not stolen was destroyed. The vandalism in all three places appeared to be that of a single gang.
“In their investigation, Mr. Elwood (a plain clothes investigator) and Mr. Estes found items taken from the Old Mill left behind at Walnut Lodge. Other evidence was fingerprints and a single hair which was sent to the FBI for analysis. The FBI reported that it was a horse hair.
