Speaking of the canabalistic Praying Mantis, now THERE is a real helper in Man's on-going battle with other bugs. They eat dozens of kinds of bugs; they even eat each other, if the notion strikes them. It’s a good idea to save the egg-cases that you find when you prune the shrubs or you can order them from Burpee and other places. Tie them to twigs in the yard, but NOT in the house!
One time my husband found a strange looking cocoon in the orchard and fearing infestation, he brought it home to be packaged to send to VPI for identification. He fit it snugly into a penny matchbox, intending to send it out in the mail, but he was in a hurry. He kept forgetting it until finally I dropped it into an end table drawer when I dusted. “Out of sight, out of mind”—we both forgot the cocoon.
Weeks (or was it months?) later when I ran out of kitchen matches, I was searching everywhere for a match to burn the
