Then again, maybe something closely related to democracy itself is at stake here. For didn’t that fine Virginian James Madison intend that Americans should enjoy open trials heard by a jury of peers? Didn’t he write a Constitution intended to safeguard the acoustics of the courtroom? Think of it. Would James Madison stand still for a moment in a court where he could hear nothing but mumbles? Would James Madison wait willingly even in wilting weather, wondering what was going on?
We think not.
We think James Madison would complain about all the noise from the new-fangled air coolers. And so do we. We do not suggest that air conditioning be eliminated. We simply wonder why the sound system isn’t being used and why people aren’t encouraged to speak up in court.
