They took the toads home and turned them loose in Mother’s pansy patch which was completely infested by bugs. A few days later Mother began to notice a happier expression and brighter eyes as the pansies smiled at her. She tells it that after about a week the toads were so big and fat that they could hardly clear the ground when they hopped. (I wouldn’t want my reputation to rest on the size of those toads, and I didn’t actually see them. But that’s the way she tells it and I never knew her to stray too far from “Gospel,” except in the repeated tellings of a good story—which is understandable.)
What Mother was practicing was the “Balance-of Nature” method of bug control. Such methods are just as timely today as they were when Granny was teaching us not to kill the blacksnakes or blue lizzards that ran in the fence rails, when Mother was collecting toads and hatching our salamanders in the lily pool.
