much longer, local resident J. Newbill Miller says his pastures may be damaged beyond repair. Miller says most of his com is far enough along that the water evaporates from the leaves rather than the vegetables, but that he pities farmers with “small com” because it can’t withstand the heat.
Miller’s situation is fairly typical of the plight of farmers throughout the county. Extension agent Birgitt Thornhill says that if the pastures are so badly burned that the grass doesn’t come back, farmers may have to start feeding their stock hay earlier this fall. Thornhill doesn’t pretend to be able to predict the weather, but says she’s certainly among those hoping for rain.
EMT Course
An Emergency Medical Technician Ambulance course offered in Culpeper beginning in mid-September on Tuesdays and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon. This course is designed to give the necessary training to those persons interested in joining rescue squads and other emergency oriented organizations.
