Birgitt Thornhill, Rappahannock’s new extension agent, is one of a rare breed in Virginia, a female agricultural agent.
Endorsed by the board of supervisors at last month’s meeting, the former county home demonstration agent took over the post from Rap Owings, who resigned in April. She held the job temporarily for three months until her formal appointment two weeks ago.
Thornhill’s expertise lies iii agriculture., She graduated from VPI in 1978 with a degree in animal science, specializing in beef, swine and sheep production, feeds, the formulation of rations, “anything that has to do with production.” Before joining the extension service, she worked with Pillsbury for three years, developing dairy rations. As home demonstration agent here, she took full responsibility for the 4-H livestock nroeram.
