“I have my fingers crossed. I won’t be completely satisfied that everything’s arranged until I’m on the plane to China. But as long as nothing drastic happens between our two countries before September, it looks like a pretty sure thing.”
Woodward will be teaching English at the university in Nanning in southern China close to Hong Kong and Canton. His hosts will provide a dormitory room and a salary. “It’s supposed to be four times what Chinese instructors get but that’s still small compared to American dollars,” Terry added.
Woqdward is npw spending every minute he can squeeze free on. learning Chinese. “Speaking the language is not a prerequisite but it will certainly make life easier—and more interesting. I realize China is a communist state, a closed society. I’m going to see what they want me to see and I’ll have to be aware that they will be putting on a show' for me. But that doesn’t stop me from reaching out and trying to hear some non-party talk, not if I can speak the language,” Woodward concluded.
