One summer day, Mother and my sister were caught in a downpour while grocery shopping over on Main Street. They stood under the awning in a doorway until the shower subsided and then they started home. But they took only a few steps and then, abruptly, they stopped, for everywhere on the sidewalk and along the curb...EVERYWHERE... were little toads hopping about as if they really had descended from the clouds, (as some people believe). Mother’s scientific explanation is that toads probably come out from shady hiding places only when it rains because their paper-thin hides would dry up like parchment in the sun. On that particular day, whether it rained toads from heaven, I know not, but there is no doubt that it rained opportunity and inspiration on Mother.

She quickly crammed all of their groceries into a single bag (called “poke” back home) and then they squatted down and waddled like E.T. back and forth on the sidewalk scooping up toads and putting them in a poke.
