The Panthers weren’t smiling at the welcome home they got Friday from their opponents in final regular season game as Madison’s big men controlled the action to hand RCHS its seventh non-district loss.
Clarence Pendleton kept the Panthers close in the first quarter, scoring at key points to keep the spark of hope flickering. But for every bucket Pendleton and the Panthers tossed in from outside, the Mountaineers answered with one of their own from underneath. Rob Brown, returning to play after a four game absence due to an ankle iryury, and guard Jeff Porter each added a basket as the clock ticked down to make it 16 all at the close of the first period.
The home team jumped into the lead in the second period and managed to hang on until the Mountaineers poked a hole in the RCHS press. Panther forwards went for the blocked shot, forgetting that even if they managed to knock the ball away, Madison had two or three players open underneath for a second try.
