Last year, after finishing first in the regular season, they were skunked in tournament play. This year, they’re out to prove that they can perform under pressure. At the close of the 1983-84 season, the RCHS squad ranked behind co-champions Strasburg and Stonewall, both at 10-2. Both lost to the Panthers.
Rappahannock’s 7-5 district mark put them ahead of George Mason (6-6), Clarke (4-8), Manassas Park (3-9) and Brentsville (2-10).
Strasburg earned top seed in the tournament by downing Stonewall in a play-off last Saturday. The win also gave the Rams an automatic berth in regional competition.
Last year, the Panthers had that berth by virtue of their regular season first place finish. They lost in the semi-final round of district competition and then lost again in the first round of regional play. This year, they’ll have to earn the regional slot by winning the tournament and if they can manage that, maybe their momentum will carry coach Don Dawson’s boys to the regional finals they should have made last year.
