The same rain falling on unprotected land could do a million dollars’ worth of damage. Bombarding raindrops loosen soil particles and float them into suspension. Sediment-laden rivulets become muddy torrents rampaging toward the sea, carrying away valuable topsoil. The waters don’t pause to nourish a drought stricken crop or refresh a thirsty animal but leave pollution and destruction are their wake.
