blood on hand and gets delivery of blood twice a week from Red Cross headquarters in Washington. But several times, says Mrs. White, type O has been in such short supply that the Red Cross could not routinely fill the Fauquier Hospital’s order for that type of blood and had to get special authorization from the director of the Washington Region’s blood services.
The principal problem, according to Fauquier Chapter officials, is that the same few donors give blood time after time and enough new donors are not entering the system. Last year, out of a population with more than 2,000 people within the proper age bracket, only 641 people donated blood. And about one-half of those are people who have donated one gallon or more which means they may have given four to six times a year for more than a year. Two donors have contributed more than 10 gallons—that would mean consistent donations for 20 years or more. Of the 641 donors, 185 have given one gallon.
