The council must begin this year with a revision and review of local laws — first the zoning ordinance and then subdivision regulations. The work comes at a time when the economy is improving, bringing an accompanying increase in growth pressures. It comes at a time when the last big piece of open land within town limits may be proposed for development.
Washington could be at a crossroads that will determine whether it will retain its historical character or go the way of too many towns that have been blighted by fast food chains, convenience stores, and buildings — both residential and commercial — that just don’t fit. We need a few good men and a few good women dedicated to preserving what is special about Washington. We need them as candidates for town government. We hope they come forward.
