enhancement and diabetes research. (One of the local members explained that diabetes’ symptoms sometimes include a gradual loss of sight. The club received a speaker on the disease at a recent meeting). The club also sponsors a blood donor program.
Bland Contest
Another community service project carried out by the state and local Lions’ clubs is the annual Bland music scholarships contest. The scholarships were named to honor black composer James A. Bland who wrote the state anthemn “Carry Me Back To Ole Virginny." It starts at the local level with winners proceeding through zone, regional, district and state competitions. Scholarships to high school music students totalling $7,400 are financed entirely through voluntary contributions from Virginia’s individual Lions’ Clubs.
The Rappahannock club offers three awards each in two categories—vocal and instrumental. The prizes include a $75 savings bond for each first place winner, a $50 bond for second place and $25 for third.
Last Sunday approximately 40 parents, students and Lions gathered at the elementary school for this year’s contest. Seven singers and two instrumentalists were evaluated on: faithfulness to score, technique, interpretation, stage presence and the complexity of selection.
