stant and adequate source of this nutrient for healthy development.

Dairy products are low in iron and it is difficult for an infant to obtain sufficient iron if egg yolks are not included in the infant’s diet. So the lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet is the best vegetarian for infants.

Ideally, a vegetarian baby should be breast fed for one full year in order to insure a constant base for his diet. The formula fed baby should remain on iron fortified formula for one full year as well for the same reason. If the breast fed infant must be weaned prior to one year of age, he should be transferred to an iron fortified formula for the remainder of the first year. Iron fortified cereals should be continued for at least 18 months.

Foods NOT RECOMMENDED for the vegetarian baby’s first year include wheat germ, granola-type cereals, nuts, seeds and fruits with seeds and pits. An infant can not digest or utilize high-fiber and coarse foods that could cause choking and irritation of the infant’s inmature digestive tract. Meat analogs should also be avoided since they contain high amounts of sodium and additives (particularly nitrites).

Portion sizes for all infants vary, depending on the appetite and age of the infant. All infants, children, teenagers, and adults need to maintain an adequate and constant nutritional base in their diets to live a healthy and productive life.
