While Democratic and Republican strategists labored at their drawing boards drafting early blueprints for next year’s gubernatorial campaigns, a rumor wafted through the state Capitol last week which could impact decisively, more or less, on their plans.
For the Democrats, to be sure, its impact would be less, but for the GOP it could be more - incalculably more.
According to that rumor, former Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. is being urged by some of his close friends to seek the Republican nomination for governor. Furthermore, as the rumor has it, he may not be adverse to the idea.
