on the front page of the March 5, 1964, issue of the Rappahannock News was seen “peering from beneath the snow” which in the opinion of the editor was “a sure sign that spring (was) not too far away.”
Preparations continued for the Rappahannock Point-to-Point scheduled for Saturday, March 7. Dale Jenkins took Rustic Rose for a practice jump on the race course at Thornton Hill Farm. Rain and higher temperatures had melted the snow and the track was expected to be in good condition.
Olympic Team rider Cathy Kusner planned to pilot Mrs. A.C. Randolph's Walrus over the three mile jumping course in the Mount Salem Ladies’ Race. She would be competing against horsewomen Kitty Smith, Lynn Bradshaw, Virginia Beach, Marilyn Reid, Mrs. R.G. Woolfe, Jr. and Mrs. W.L. Rochester, Jr.
The March of Dimes campaign topped the $500 mark. Rappahannock County chairman Frances Foster thanked her volunteers and all the contributors for the success of the solicitation — final total $542.55.'
Rappahannock County resumed its program for the dentally indigent after a lapse of two years. A clinic was established at the Washington Elementary School and an Alexandria dentist made preliminary examination of a Sperryville student as the program got underway.
The Flint Hill Fire Department purchased a new engine. It was an 850 Ford with a 477 motor and was outfitted with a Bean high pressure and volume combination pumper able to operate at 750 gallons per minute. Terry Davis, Larry Welch and Paul Miller posed in front of the two-tone red and white truck as Herbert Foster presented the keys to Elwood Welch.
