County To Construct Shelter
Following an executive (private) session on December 3, the Board of Supervisors announced plans to construct a “modular-type” animal shelter on the property of Animal Warden Jack Bruce.
The announcement was made by Supervisor Hubert Gilkey III who, with Supervisor Nelson Lane, forms the Animal Shelter/Landfill committee.
Supervisor Gilkey said plans for a modular unit that would meet state regulations had been drafted. The modular unit later could be moved when the county establishes its own location for an animal shelter, Supervisor Gilkey said. A lawsuit Sled against the county by the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies still is pending. The lawsuit asks that Rappahannock come into cnmpHanee with existing state code in regard to animal welfare.
• Bus Evacuation Practice Tuesday
Rappahannock County Schools are scheduled to practice emergency evacuation of school buses on Tuesday, December 11, at 3:10 p.m. In the instance of inclement weather, the practice will take place on the following day, December 12.
The bus evacuation practice is necessary to comply with Virginia Department of Education guidelines for emergency procedures.
• Board Accepts Resignation
The resignation of county Home Economics Extension Agent Florence Vickers was accepted “with regrets” on December 3 by the Board of Supervisors.
Board Chairman Richard Latham announced that Miss Vickers had accepted a position in Clarke County that will enable her to focus attention in the area of county 4-H activities.
Miss Vickers will leave her Rappahannock post on December 31, a position she held for a year.
