When I came to Washington, Va. in 1946 as the bride of a native, Trenton “Pete” Burke, one of the things that was made clear to me by him and his father and mother, Guy and Janie Burke, then deputy sheriff of Rappahannock County residing at the residence jail, was that this was Washington, Va., the first Washington of all.

Never was I to refer to it as Little Washington. So what happened? TV stations have picked up on Little Washington, the sign on Main St. of a restaurant that has been there for several years also has displayed the sign Little Washington, and just today in a national paper a writing featuring Mat
